Can I Scrap My Car Without a Log Book (V5C)?
Yes. You can legally scrap a car without its V5C log book. It's one of the most common questions we get, and a missing log book doesn't stop us collecting your car or paying you for it. There are just a couple of extra steps, so the DVLA knows the car has gone and you're no longer responsible for it.
What you need instead of the V5C
We need to know the car is yours to scrap. If you don't have the V5C, you'll need valid photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport, that matches the registered keeper of the vehicle. Have the keys ready too if you have them.
If you're scrapping a car for someone else, for example a relative's car or one you've inherited, call us before booking and we'll explain what we need.
How to tell the DVLA without a V5C
Normally you'd tell the DVLA online using the 11-digit reference number from the V5C. Without it, you must write to the DVLA instead. Your letter needs to include:
- Your name and address
- The car's registration number
- The make and model
- The exact date you handed it over for scrap
- The scrapyard's name and address: Revva Vehicle Recycling, 2B Doddington Rd, Chatteris PE16 6UA
GOV.UK gives the postal address and warns that a letter can be rejected if any of these details are missing, so check it before you post it and keep a copy for your records.
Should I get a replacement V5C first?
You don't have to. A replacement V5C usually costs £25 and takes 5 to 7 working days to arrive by post. It's worth it if you'd rather tell the DVLA online, or if you're not sure the car's registered details are correct. If you just want the car gone, you can scrap it now and write to the DVLA instead.
Will a missing log book lower my price?
Not at Revva. Your price is based on the car's weight, age, make and condition, not on whether you have the V5C. Our instant quote form asks whether you have the log book so we know what to bring on the day, but your answer doesn't change the price.
What happens after collection
We take the car to our licensed yard, pay you by bank transfer, and issue a Certificate of Destruction once it's been scrapped. GOV.UK says this must be within 7 days for a car. Once the DVLA has your details, they'll refund any full months left on your vehicle tax, and a Direct Debit is cancelled automatically.
